Abstract
This report presents a post-conflict environmental assessment developed by the United Nations Environment Programme at the request of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. Designed as a rapid, strategic evaluation, it focuses on the country's most urgent environmental concerns in the wake of the Kosovo crisis. The assessment identifies five industrial ‘hot spots’ posing immediate threats to human health and ecosystems, highlights environmental impacts stemming from the refugee influx, and evaluates the capacity of national institutions to manage environmental challenges. Drawing on extensive field missions, sample analyses, and consultations with stakeholders, the document emphasizes the need for targeted international support and domestic policy reforms. It outlines actionable recommendations for environmental remediation, improved waste management, air and water quality monitoring, and institutional strengthening.
