Latvia Report on Sustainable Governance Indicators

This report presents an evaluation of Latvia’s governance, institutional performance, and public policy framework as of 2014. It highlights Latvia’s recovery from the global financial crisis, underlining effective fiscal management, the introduction of the euro, and the emergence of robust strategic planning mechanisms, such as the Cross-Sectoral Coordination Center. Despite progress, the report underscores persistent challenges: significant income inequality, underperforming health and education systems, and a lack of innovation capacity. Institutional reforms have strengthened strategic government coherence, yet parliamentary oversight is weakened by limited resources, and slow-moving reforms continue to impede progress in key social sectors. The justice system faces delays with court backlogs, anti-corruption efforts require greater efficacy, and public trust in government remains low.
