Abstract

This report presents the outcomes of a United States Environmental Protection Agency funded project implemented by Health Care Without Harm under the United Nations Environment Programme Mercury in Products Partnership to support the phase-out of mercury thermometers and blood pressure devices in Brazil and South Africa. In Brazil, advocacy, regional awareness campaigns and a nationwide survey informed the development of a national action plan and policy supporting substitution in the health sector. In South Africa, engagement with national and provincial health authorities led to provincial action plans acknowledging the Convention and outlining steps towards a coordinated national plan.
