Abstract

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Post-Conflict and Disaster Management Branch, in cooperation with the Secretariat of the Basel Convention (SBC), is implementing a project to strengthen capacity for hazardous waste management in Côte d’Ivoire. The project stems from the dumping of hazardous waste from the M/S Probo Koala in Abidjan in August 2006, which highlighted the urgent need for improvement in the management of hazardous waste in Côte d’Ivoire and control and monitoring of trans-boundary movement of hazardous waste. The main objectives of the project are to: ensure the environmentally acceptable management of hazardous waste in Abidjan through the development of a Hazardous Waste Management Plan for the District of Abidjan; and strengthen capacities within Côte d’Ivoire and Africa to monitor and control the transboundary movement of hazardous waste.
