The GEO-6 Process

This document details the structured and scientifically rigorous process behind the Sixth Global Environment Outlook (GEO-6), developed under the mandate of the United Nations Environment Assembly. Designed as a comprehensive and policy-relevant environmental evaluation, the process integrated inputs from over 150 authors and 27 fellows across 25 chapters, covering global, regional, and national dimensions. The GEO-6 employed the DPSIR framework and focused particularly on aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals. Its development was guided by three formal advisory bodies—the High-level Intergovernmental and Stakeholder Advisory Group, the Scientific Advisory Panel, and the Assessment Methodologies Working Group—ensuring policy legitimacy, scientific credibility, and methodological consistency. The report underwent five rounds of expert and government peer reviews, incorporating more than 14,000 comments to strengthen its analytical depth and coherence.
