Abstract

This document outlines UNEP’s Faith for Earth Initiative’s plan to mobilize faith leaders and organizations to advance the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration by leveraging their landholdings, influence, and networks across societies. It diagnoses six systemic barriers to large-scale restoration—awareness, investment priorities, enabling policy, technical capacity, finance, and research—and proposes three pathways: build a peer-driven global movement, foster political will, and catalyze science and capacity for restoration at scale. The document links restoration to multiple SDGs, details ten priority actions, and illustrates faith-based engagement through efforts such as the Interfaith Rainforest Initiative, green houses of worship, and support for landscape programs like the Great Green Wall.
