Abstract

This report is a vision paper that examines the potential for achieving net decarbonisation in the Latin American and the Caribbean region by the middle of the century. The study contextualises this goal within global efforts to maintain temperature increases below two degrees Celsius. It assesses sector-wide actions, focusing on energy, transport, land use, and industrial activities. Utilising projections from the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, the document constructs an illustrative pathway toward zero net emissions. The findings indicate that while significant political, behavioural, and financial barriers exist, a transition is technically achievable and could yield substantial regional economic, social, and developmental co-benefits, including improved energy security, food security, and air quality, provided that coordinated and ambitious climate actions are implemented.
