Abstract
This document reports on the fifth Africa Animal Welfare Conference, held in Accra, Ghana, from November 1 to 3, 2021, with 564 participants attending in person and online. It describes the conference purpose of advancing discussion and coordination on animal welfare in relation to public health, animal health, and environmental health, including pandemic prevention. The report summarises the programme structure, including opening and welcome sessions, theme exposition, and multiple technical sessions covering wildlife and livestock trade, food security and safety, climate change, education and research, sustainable development, and legal advocacy. It records agreed resolutions that call for policy action by the African Union and governments, including phasing out factory farming, strengthening welfare-focused practices, and developing reporting and codes of practice for wildlife use and trade.
