Abstract

This presentation outlines the chemical industry’s perspective on identifying chemicals and polymers of concern in the context of addressing plastic pollution. It describes the role of the International Council of Chemical Associations in advancing global chemicals management and supporting an international legally binding instrument to promote a circular economy for plastics. The document emphasises the need to strengthen existing regulatory frameworks, close management gaps through capacity building and cooperation, and enhance transparency on additives in commerce. It proposes developing a comprehensive additives database linked to a lifecycle-based risk assessment framework, alongside global provisions on design for recyclability and evolving quality standards for recycled plastics.
