Abstract

The growing concern over toxic chemical pollution includes the impacts of recycling used lead-acid batteries (ULABs). In Bangladesh, widespread demand and unsafe, informal, illegal, and unregulated recycling facilities have contributed to significant lead pollution in soil and water, threatening human health and the environment. This assessment reviews global and regional trends in battery production, consumption, and end-of-life management; examines the environmental, social, and economic impacts of poor battery waste management; assesses current waste management and public awareness; and presents a strategy to reduce lead pollution from lead-acid batteries.
