Overview of Land-based Sources and Activities Affecting the Marine, Coastal and Associated Freshwater Environment in the West and Central African Region

This report provides a regional overview of land-based sources and activities affecting marine, coastal, and associated freshwater environments in the West and Central African region. It describes natural conditions and processes, demographic and economic activities, and the principal sources of pollution and environmental degradation identified across the region. The report examines problems associated with sewage, solid waste, industrial and agricultural activities, physical alteration of coastal areas, hydrocarbons, and other pollutants. It draws on regional information and country reports covering fifteen countries, identifies emerging and foreseeable environmental problems, and presents strategies, measures, and priorities for national, regional, and international cooperation. Country-by-country analyses provide additional information on sources, impacts, management objectives, and proposed measures.
