Peatlands Matter: Evidence Synthesis Methods and Applications to Inform Nature and Climate Policy in support of the recommendations of the Global Peatlands Assessment

Peatlands are critical for climate regulation, biodiversity, water security and livelihoods, yet degradation can turn them from long-term carbon stores into major greenhouse gas sources. This publication presents a rapid evidence synthesis methodology developed with Global Peatlands Initiative partners to strengthen the peatland science-policy interface. Building on the Global Peatlands Assessment, it applies the method to seven priority topics, including GHG emissions, tropical carbon vulnerability, South American and mountain peatlands, NDCs, community-based management and inclusive participation. The findings reinforce protection of intact peatlands as the highest priority, alongside hydrological restoration, sustainable livelihoods and meaningful community participation. The methodology provides policymakers, practitioners and researchers with practical, evidence-based guidance and a replicable approach for future peatland policy and research needs.
