Inventory of worldwide PCB destruction capacity

This document provides a global overview of existing facilities and technologies for the destruction and management of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) wastes. Drawing on detailed survey responses from national authorities, UNEP POPs focal points, and supplementary data from the Secretariat of the Basel Convention, it examines key treatment methods—including high-temperature incineration, chemical dechlorination, plasma arc systems, and landfilling—highlighting their respective advantages, limitations, and operational characteristics. Regional summaries present the specific capacities, locations, and services of facilities across Africa, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, North America, and West Asia. The report also explores challenges such as gaps in inventory development, transboundary transport issues, regulatory compliance, public acceptance, and environmental risks. It incorporates relevant technical guidelines under the Basel Convention to support environmentally sound management of PCB wastes.
