Abstract
This document presents a summary of a one-hour workshop convened by UNEP under the Italian G20 Presidency, with the European Commission and the IEA, to brief G20 delegations on methane emissions and the role of the International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) in enabling science-based mitigation. It highlights that rapid methane reductions, especially in the oil and gas sector, are feasible and cost-effective; that regulations such as leak detection and repair and equipment mandates can begin using existing data; and that IMEO will integrate direct measurements, satellite observations, and OGMP reporting into a verified public dataset to support policy. The session underscores the G20’s leverage and urges endorsement of IMEO, encouragement of OGMP participation, and near-term abatement. A Q&A addressed reconciling top-down and bottom-up data, sector prioritization, technology transfer, and coordination across organizations.
