Abstract
This report provides an overview of environmental protection research in Serbia, identifying strategic priorities for the period between 2008 and 2012. The document contextualises the national research and development system, which historically lacks predefined thematic goals and relies on a bottom-up funding approach. Utilising expert consultations and analysis of ongoing projects, the methodology focuses on monitoring, prevention, and mitigation of environmental risks. Key findings highlight the necessity of aligning national activities with European Union research frameworks to enhance regional cooperation. The scope covers diverse sectors, including waste management, water protection, and energy efficiency, while addressing socio-economic challenges such as industrial legacies and climate change. Ultimately, the report suggests specific priority themes to improve ecological efficiency and strengthen participation in international scientific programmes.
