Food Waste Index Report 2024

This report highlights the importance of measuring food waste to support action towards Sustainable Development Goal 12.3 by assessing its scale, identifying opportunities for reduction, and establishing a baseline for tracking progress. Building on the Food Waste Index Report 2021, it reflects improved understanding of food waste across the retail, food service, and household sectors, including greater data availability and comparability of household food waste generation. The report provides a new global estimate of food waste based on updated data, expands guidance on measuring food waste across the three sectors by examining different methodologies and their strengths and limitations, and shifts attention towards food waste reduction by examining effective approaches worldwide, with a particular focus on public-private partnerships for reducing food loss and waste.
