Abstract
This report presents a visual environmental assessment of the Caspian Sea region, examining the interaction between natural systems, economic development and regional governance. It describes the geographic characteristics, demographic context and economic activities of the coastal states while outlining the growing importance of oil and gas exploration, transport infrastructure and fisheries. The document analyses environmental pressures arising from industrial development, river regulation, pollution and large engineering projects that have altered hydrology and ecosystems. It also reviews climate variability, fluctuations in sea level and their impacts on coastal settlements and infrastructure. Particular attention is given to biodiversity loss, declining fish stocks, public health concerns and the need for cooperative regional management to address transboundary environmental risks and resource conflicts.
