Abstract
This study consists essentially of a country-by-country review of the legislation of the countries bordering the Mediterranean with regard to the establishment of marine or coastal protected areas and, in particular, the special areas of conservation designated under the Protocol of 3 April 1982 to the Barcelona Convention on Specially Protected Areas in the Mediterranean (Geneva Protocol). This overview is followed by a summary in the form of conclusions analysing the various problems involved in the establishment and management of these protected areas. When analysing the legislation in force, an attempt was made to review as many legal texts as possible. Thus, the general texts on coastal protection, protected areas and fisheries were analysed, insofar as the latter allow the establishment of no-fishing zones.
