2008 Report of the Arab Forum for Environment and Development: Arab Environment: Future Challenges

This document presents an independent, policy-oriented assessment of environmental conditions in Arab countries for the public and for decision makers. It sets a baseline by evaluating key sectors using national and international data cross-checked with experts and research institutions, and supplemented where feasible by field surveys, while noting gaps from missing or incoherent national data. It explains how rapid population growth and largely short-term development measures have increased pressure on natural resources and contributed to environmental deterioration. The document identifies priority challenges including water scarcity, land degradation and desertification, limited capacity for waste management, coastal and marine degradation, air pollution, and warming. It also reports substantial economic costs, citing estimates of several percent of gross domestic product in the region
