Abstract

This policy-makers’ summary presents the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme’s 2015 assessment of short-lived climate pollutants and their role in Arctic climate change. It examines methane, black carbon and ozone, outlining their sources, atmospheric behaviour, transport patterns and warming effects in the Arctic. Drawing on updated observations and modelling studies, the document evaluates how emissions from Arctic and non-Arctic regions contribute to regional warming and identifies major emission sectors. It concludes that carbon dioxide remains the primary driver of climate change, while mitigation of short-lived climate pollutants can complement carbon dioxide reductions and help reduce projected Arctic warming by 2050.
