Policy Options to Eliminate Additional Marine Plastic Litter By 2050 Under the G20 Osaka Blue Ocean Vision - Policy Paper

This think piece examines policy options to eliminate additional marine plastic litter by 2050 in line with the Osaka Blue Ocean Vision, agreed under the Japanese presidency of the Group of Twenty in 2019, which commits countries to reduce additional marine plastic pollution to zero through a comprehensive life cycle approach. Commissioned by the Government of Japan on behalf of the Group of Twenty, it was prepared by the International Resource Panel, an independent scientific panel hosted by the United Nations Environment Programme, in partnership with SYSTEMIQ and The Pew Charitable Trusts. Drawing on scenario modelling and a review of 291 public policies addressing plastic leakage across the life cycle, the document assesses current policy trends, identifies coordination and ambition gaps, and outlines upstream and downstream interventions required to achieve systemic reform of the plastics economy and the 2050 objective.
