Share the Road: Minimum Standards for Safe, Sustainable and Accessible Transport Infrastructure in Nairobi

This report, prepared by Climate XL-Africa for the United Nations Environment Programme, presents an analysis of Nairobi's transport infrastructure with a focus on non-motorized transport (NMT) such as walking and cycling. It highlights the critical need for safer, more sustainable, and accessible transport systems, given that nearly half of Nairobi's daily trips are made on foot or by bicycle. The study evaluates the inadequacy of existing NMT facilities, noting that 76% of surveyed roads lack proper pedestrian infrastructure, contributing to high accident rates, with pedestrians accounting for over 70% of fatalities. Key recommendations include allocating at least 10% of road funding to NMT safety measures, implementing minimum design standards for sidewalks and cycleways, and prioritizing interventions in high-density areas. The report also emphasizes the economic, social, and environmental benefits of investing in NMT, supported by case studies and cost analyses.
