Guia de Pagamento por Serviços Ambientais da Sociobiodiversidade - Recomendações e caminhos de implementação

The study aims to provide guidance to support the effective implementation of Payment for Environmental Services (PES) schemes that recognize and reward the sustainable practices of Indigenous Peoples, Quilombola, and Traditional Communities (IP&LCs). These practices are closely linked to socio-biodiversity value chains and the preservation of their territories, highlighting the vital role these communities play in maintaining ecosystem services. Designed to complement the findings of the previous study and based on demands identified directly within the territories, the Guide addresses the growing importance of PES for socio-biodiversity. It aims to support local organizations, as well as the public and private sectors, in developing and implementing PES schemes in a way that ensures fair compensation and sustainability. The Guide is structured around four key pillars: the role of PES as a corrective economic tool to address market failures and improve benefit-sharing; the identification and inclusion of environmental service providers at both individual and collective levels; the establishment of minimum criteria for PES effectiveness—such as baselines, monitoring, and conditionality; and the economic structuring of PES systems, including cost assessment and potential funding sources. It concludes with practical recommendations and pathways for implementing PES as a fair mechanism that strengthens traditional livelihoods while promoting conservation.
