Abstract

This document presents guidance on sustainable solid waste management in Kenya, by Dr. Frank Wesonga of the All African Conferences of Churches. It explains principles—the right to a clean and healthy environment, the precautionary approach, polluter pays, zero waste, and pursuit of sustainability goals. Using plastic pollution as a case, it defines the zero-waste principle as designing products and processes to minimize volume and toxicity, conserve resources, and avoid burning or burying materials. It notes legal obligations for private and public entities to provide segregation receptacles and highlights devolved governments’ responsibilities, enabling reuse, recycling, recovery, and a circular economy.
