dc.descriptionThis feasibility study examines options for transitioning the Khaidarkan Mercury Combine in Kyrgyzstan away from primary mercury production in response to anticipated global restrictions and environmental concerns. It analyses geological, economic, environmental, and social factors associated with developing alternative mineral resources, particularly gold and non-metallic deposits near the existing facility. The study draws on prior technical assessments, cost calculations, and local expertise to evaluate development scenarios, including ore processing configurations and infrastructure requirements. Findings indicate that alternative mining and processing activities could maintain or increase employment while reducing mercury emissions, though implementation requires substantial investment, institutional coordination, and gradual transition to mitigate socio-economic impacts.
