This report presents the results of Phase 1 of a project developed under an agreement between the United Nations Environment Programme and a national partner to address the storage and disposal of mercury in Panama. It reviews the regulatory framework, updates the national mercury inventory using the United Nations Environment Programme toolkit, analyses hazardous and mercury waste management practices, and identifies gaps in legislation and implementation. The inventory indicates increased mercury releases, particularly from batteries, informal dumping and cement production. The report evaluates potential sites for temporary storage of elemental mercury and contaminated waste, establishes a multi-stakeholder working group, and sets out a validated National Action Plan for environmentally sound management.en
