Abstract
This post-conflict environmental assessment report provides an analysis of Albania's environmental challenges in the aftermath of the Kosovo crisis, focusing on urgent industrial "hot spots," the impacts of refugee influxes, and institutional capacities for environmental management. The assessment identifies five critical sites—including chemical plants, oil fields, and waste dumps—posing immediate risks to human health and ecosystems due to hazardous contamination. The report also evaluates the environmental consequences of hosting refugees, noting minimal long-term damage but highlighting areas where better planning could mitigate future risks. Additionally, it examines Albania's evolving environmental governance framework, emphasizing the need for stronger policies, enforcement, and public awareness.
