Abstract

This summary assesses the viability of low-carbon livestock practices promoted under Costa Rica’s Low Carbon Livestock Strategy and Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action. Using data from four livestock farms and stochastic modelling of baseline and improved scenarios, it examines the effects of rotational grazing, improved pastures, fodder banks, hedgerows, and forest regeneration on productivity, profitability, greenhouse gas emissions, and carbon sequestration. The analysis finds that most practices can improve both financial and environmental performance, although results vary according to farm characteristics, management conditions, and key technical parameters.
