Bamako Convention: Preventing Africa from becoming a dumping ground for toxic wastes

This document is a UNEP press release on the Bamako Convention and COP-2 in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire (30 January–1 February 2018). It explains the Convention’s creation in response to toxic waste dumping and recalls incidents in Abidjan (Probo Koala, 2006) and Koko, Nigeria (1988). It describes the Convention’s ban on importing hazardous and radioactive wastes and its objectives for environmentally sound management and cooperation among African states. It notes COP-1 in Bamako, Mali (24–26 June 2013) and the ministerial declaration to prevent toxic waste dumping. UN Environment officials expect commitment, financing mechanisms, and provide a COP-2 link and contacts.
