dc.description	This scientific survey report is published by UNEP in 1982 as part of its Regional Seas Reports and Studies series (No. 5). Conducted in cooperation with the International Laboratory of Marine Radioactivity (IAEA), the report presents findings from a field mission carried out in 1980 to assess oil pollution along Oman’s extensive coastline. The survey recorded alarmingly high concentrations of tar on beaches—up to 2,325 g/m—particularly near the Strait of Hormuz, primarily attributed to illegal tanker deballasting. Complementary chemical analyses of sediments, shellfish, and fish revealed moderate but chronic petroleum contamination, as well as generally low levels of chlorinated hydrocarbons and heavy metals. The report recommends seasonal monitoring, species standardization in bioindicator studies, and enhanced analytical methods to support marine pollution control within the framework of the Kuwait Action Plan.	en
