dc.descriptionThis technical assessment presents the relationship between cadmium exposure and early indicators of kidney dysfunction in humans. Conducted by the Monitoring and Assessment Research Centre (MARC) with support from UNEP and the European Commission, the report synthesizes data from epidemiological studies of populations in Japan and a group of occupationally exposed workers. It examines methods for estimating cadmium exposure—such as dietary intake, faecal excretion, and urinary cadmium levels—and evaluates their reliability. The study emphasizes the use of urinary β2-microglobulin as the principal biomarker for renal effects and critically assesses its specificity, stability, and diagnostic relevance. Dose-response and dose-effect analyses are conducted using regression and probit analysis, showing that while most of the population is protected by WHO's provisional tolerable cadmium intake, a small percentage may still show early renal effects.en
