Shades of Green: An Introduction to the Green Economy for Parliamentarians - Issue Brief

Abstract

This issue brief examines future baseline scenarios for global anthropogenic methane emissions through to 2030, evaluating current trends against international climate targets. Utilizing multiple global emissions inventories and models, the study analyzes projected business-as-usual trajectories across the agricultural, fossil fuel, and waste management sectors. The findings indicate that atmospheric methane concentrations continue to rise at unprecedented rates, substantially exceeding the pathways necessary to limit global warming beneath critical temperature thresholds. The assessment concludes that while cost-effective technical abatement potential exists across all target sectors, current policy frameworks remain entirely insufficient to reverse these increasing emission trends.
