Fourth ASEAN State of the Environment Report

This report presents a comprehensive regional assessment of environmental conditions and management across the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, produced following the entry into force of the regional charter and aligned with the roadmap for community building through 2015. It applies a pressure–state–response framework to examine how demographic change, economic growth, urbanisation, and resource use affect environmental quality. The document reviews the status and trends of terrestrial, freshwater, coastal, marine, and atmospheric systems, as well as patterns of production and consumption, using national data and agreed indicators. It also addresses major transboundary and global issues, including climate change, land and forest fires, and haze pollution. The report documents regional and national policy responses, institutional arrangements, and cooperative mechanisms supporting environmental management. It highlights progress in environmental performance and relatively low ecological footprint at the regional level, while noting persistent pressures from development needs and poverty reduction. The report concludes by outlining the regional response framework and the strategic direction toward a greener, more sustainable regional community grounded in coordinated national action and regional cooperation.
