Abstract

The "About UNEP" Booklet outlines UNEP’s mission to provide leadership and partnerships for environmental stewardship that improves quality of life without harming future generations, and describes its roles as advocate, educator, catalyst, and facilitator. It summarizes core functions—assessing environmental trends, developing international and national instruments, strengthening institutions, integrating economy and environment, transferring knowledge and technology, and fostering new partnerships. It locates headquarters in Nairobi and lists six regional offices, specialized divisions, liaison offices, and collaborating centers. It notes hosted convention secretariats, major milestones from 1972 onward, and the Global Environment Outlook assessment and disaster-response work. Program areas include legal and institutional support, resource management (e.g., OzonAction, GPA, ICRAN, GRASP), energy policy, sustainable consumption and production initiatives, and public engagement through civil society, education, publications, global days, and awards.
