Improving Efficiency in Forestry Operations and Forest Product Processing in Kenya: A Viable REDD+ Policy and Measure - Summary for Policy Makers

This summary for policymakers examines whether improving efficiency in forestry operations and forest product processing can function as effective policies and measures to support reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in Kenya. It assesses five sub-sectors: commercial logging, timber processing, charcoal production, household cooking technologies and industrial wood use, estimating costs, biomass savings and emission reduction potential. The analysis shows that efficiency improvements in charcoal production and fuelwood consumption provide the greatest emission reductions, exceeding 20 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per year, while gains in plantation forestry and sawmilling have limited mitigation impact. It also reviews required investments, cost efficiency and consistency with national climate and forest cover objectives.
