| dc.description | Artificial intelligence is becoming an important tool for accelerating climate action by processing large environmental data sets and supporting informed decision-making. Methane mitigation is a priority because reducing methane emissions is one of the fastest and most cost-effective ways to slow near-term global warming. The United Nations Environment Programme’s International Methane Emissions Observatory uses artificial intelligence within its Methane Alert and Response System to analyse satellite observations, detect major methane emissions and notify governments and companies to support rapid mitigation. The system enables specialists to process 12–15 times more data than manual methods and has analysed more than 1.3 million satellite measurements since becoming operational in 2024, contributing to over 40 verified emission reductions. The report highlights the responsible use of artificial intelligence, advances in data curation and monitoring, and the growing role of artificial intelligence in strengthening global methane mitigation and supporting future environmental monitoring as satellite data continue to expand. | en |
