dc.descriptionThis document presents Nepal’s experience with Integrated Strategic Environmental Assessments (ISEAs) as a timely response to the urgent need for sustainable, disaster-resilient recovery following the devastating 2015 Gorkha earthquake, which claimed nearly 9,000 lives and caused USD 7 billion in damages. As one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable nations—ranking 4th for climate hazard exposure, 11th for earthquake risk, and 30th for flood risk—Nepal faces major challenges in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly amid political instability and limited institutional capacity. In 2016, UN Environment collaborated with the Government of Nepal, drawing on lessons from post-conflict Sri Lanka, to pilot the ISEA tool in 14 earthquake-affected districts, with a focused case study in Sindhupalchok. The ISEA process mapped environmental baselines and hazard risks to support safer road reconstruction under the Post Disaster Recovery Framework. It offers a faster, participatory alternative to lengthy EIAs, integrating environmental, disaster, and development planning to guide recovery and long-term sustainability.en
