Environment Outlook in Amazonia: Global Environment Outlook Amazonia

This document presents an integrated environmental assessment of the Amazon Basin shared by Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela, prepared through a multi-year, multi-country process using the Global Environment Outlook methodology. It frames Amazonia’s global ecological significance while describing contemporary socioeconomic change, including rapid urbanisation, expanding monoculture and livestock production, and large transport and energy infrastructures. The assessment links these pressures to major impacts such as extensive deforestation, habitat loss and biodiversity decline, water-quality degradation from multiple anthropogenic sources, and rising social conflict and health vulnerabilities.
