Environmental Management of the Iraqi Marshlands: ESTs for Drinking Water Provision - A Training Kit

This trainer’s handbook is developed by UNEP’s Division of Technology, Industry and Economics and its International Environmental Technology Centre to support the sustainable management and restoration of the Iraqi Marshlands through capacity building in Environmentally Sound Technologies (ESTs) for drinking water provision. It addresses critical challenges related to freshwater degradation, waterborne diseases, and public health risks in marshland communities. The handbook is designed to enhance the technical capabilities of Iraqi professionals by emphasizing the importance and benefits of ESTs, advancing knowledge on water treatment and quality control, promoting the adoption of sustainable technologies, and establishing effective operation and maintenance systems. Structured around detailed modules, it combines technical lectures, policy insights, and field experiences such as reverse osmosis plant visits and community-driven projects. As part of a comprehensive training kit, it includes both a Trainer’s Handbook with instructional methodologies and a Participant’s Handbook with lecture materials, enabling practical, locally anchored solutions for resilient water management.
