| dc.description | This report provides an overview of Somalia’s energy sector, offering statistical detail and context. Despite extensive natural resources, Somalia’s electrification rate remains low, with only 32.7% of the population having access to electricity in 2015. The majority of electricity—97.1%—is generated using fossil fuels, while renewable energy sources, primarily traditional biomass, account for over 94% of final energy consumption. Urban households primarily rely on charcoal, leading to significant deforestation; forest cover plummeted from 60% in 1985 to just 10% by 2001. Hydropower plays a minimal role due to security concerns, and oil exploration is limited, though large reserves may exist. Solar and wind resources are abundant and underexploited, presenting significant future opportunities. The sector is fragmented, with separate regional networks and most electricity provision driven by private operators. | en |
