Procedure on the use of literature in the reports of the GEO

This document outlines procedures governing the use of literature in the Global Environment Outlook (GEO) reports, emphasizing transparency and scientific integrity. The present appendix is provided to ensure that the GEO’s process for the use of literature is open and transparent. In the assessment process, emphasis is placed on assuring the quality of all cited literature. Priority is given to peer-reviewed and publicly available scientific, technical, and socioeconomic literature, including previous GEO assessment reports. The guidance covers the selection, assessment, and citation of diverse sources, including government and institutional publications and other non-traditional materials. Responsibilities are clearly defined for coordinating authors, review editors, the technical support unit, and the GEO Secretariat to safeguard the credibility and traceability of all referenced sources.
