| dc.description | This chapter presents a global and regional assessment of progress on the environmental dimension of the Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on 92 environment-related indicators using data extracted from the Global Indicator Database in June 2022. It evaluates changes in data availability and indicator trends rather than explaining underlying causes. Globally, data availability improved, with fewer indicators lacking sufficient data and a higher proportion showing positive environmental change, although negative or stagnant trends also increased. Detailed analyses are provided for freshwater and marine ecosystems across regions, highlighting pressures such as climate change, pollution and water stress, alongside policy responses under international water and ocean initiatives. The chapter also introduces socioeconomic, infrastructure, governance, environmental and natural resource factors selected for subsequent statistical analysis.
