In the Chapter on Coastal and Marine Resources the UNEP Regional Seas Programme and the scheme that later became the Global Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land-based Activities (GPA), are called to assist small island developing States (SIDS) with the development and implementation of integrated coastal zone management plans, to improve international coordination in that field and to develop strategies to prevent further marine and coastal degradation.
