NO This booklet explains the nature of ionising radiation, its effects on humans and the environment, and the principal natural and artificial sources of radiation exposure. It describes the physical principles of radiation, radiation quantities and exposure pathways before examining biological effects, including early and delayed health effects, impacts on children, embryos and future generations, and effects on animals and plants. The publication summarises evidence from epidemiological studies, clinical investigations, laboratory research and assessments of populations exposed through medical procedures, occupational activities and major nuclear accidents. It also outlines exposure from natural background radiation, medical applications, industrial uses, nuclear power, nuclear weapons and consumer products, presenting scientific information derived primarily from evaluations of the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation.
