It compiles scientific information on the occurrence, distribution and behaviour of contaminants in marine and coastal systems. The document examines pollutants in seawater, sediments and marine organisms, with attention to substances such as heavy metals, chlorinated hydrocarbons and organotin compounds. It also describes environmental processes influencing contaminant mobility and transformation, including geochemical changes in sediments and variations in oxygen conditions. Monitoring observations, analytical approaches and case studies are presented to illustrate pathways, accumulation and ecological implications of these contaminants within marine ecosystems.
