It examines five key sectors—forestry operations, timber processing, charcoal production, household fuelwood use, and industrial fuelwood use—assessing their current inefficiencies, potential biomass savings, and associated greenhouse gas emission reductions. While efficiency improvements in timber harvesting and processing yield socio-economic benefits, significant carbon reductions are primarily expected from enhancing charcoal production and reducing household and industrial fuelwood consumption. These measures could cut emissions by over 21 million tCO2e annually—equivalent to 27% of Kenya’s 2010 GHG levels—at a combined annual investment of $38 million.
