Developed collaboratively by the Government of Kenya, UNEP, and international partners, it presents a comprehensive account of wetland distribution, ecological characteristics, pressures, and contributions to national development. The atlas profiles both internal and transboundary wetlands, highlighting their critical role in climate regulation, water purification, biodiversity conservation, and livelihoods. It also explores the impact of human activities such as agriculture, urbanization, and hydropower on wetland integrity, as well as emerging threats from climate change. Emphasizing wetlands’ role in achieving Vision 2030 and the MDGs, the document calls for urgent policy action, enhanced legal frameworks, and community engagement.
