NO The Stockholm+50 meeting, which is scheduledto take place from 2-3 June 2022 in Stockholm,Sweden, will commemorate the 1972 UNConference on the Human Environment andcelebrate 50 years of global environmentalaction. As part of the preparatory process forStockholm+50, a series of five regional multistakeholderconsultations is taking place toensure inclusivity and participation of regionalstakeholders. These consultations aim toprovide an opportunity for stakeholders to,among other things, review and assess how theglobal environment can be supported to helpcountries and regions attain the 2030 Agendafor Sustainable Development and its SustainableDevelopment Goals (SDGs), focusing on capacitybuilding and on innovative and enhanced meansof implementation.The West Asia Regional Multi-stakeholderConsultation took place from 11-12 May 2022.Participants highlighted issues of concern to theregion, particularly relating to waste reductionand management, water resources management,sustainable agriculture, and poverty eradication.They also made a variety of proposals on actionsthat should be taken to address the region’schallenges, with many emphasizing the needto enact and enforce laws relating to wastemanagement and the protection of rights, andthe need for behavioral change to implement acircular economy model. They called for engagingcivil society organizations (CSOs), women,and youth in relevant actions.The regional consultation was organized by UNEPand GO4SDGs (Global opportunities for SDGs).Opening RemarksAbdul-Majeid Haddad, Deputy Regional Director,UN Environment Programme (UNEP) RegionalOffice for West Asia, moderated the session.Åsa Hjelt, Counsellor, Deputy Head of Mission,Embassy of Sweden in Lebanon and Syria, saideveryone must get involved in environmentalprotection if we want to succeed, underliningthat “we don’t have another 50 years to get ouract together.” She noted the global response tothe COVID-19 pandemic has shown what can beachieved through cooperation, and stressed thatthe environmental crisis is “no less severe” thanCOVID-19.
