It aims to reduce thedependence on fossil fuels in the energy andindustrial sectors. Bioeconomy has been widelyaccepted by different countries and regions as acritical strategy for coping with fossil fuel shortageand climate change, among other environmentalproblems. Bioeconomy mainly utilizes biomassresources to generate bio-based products. In termsof biomass resources, they can be divided into threegenerations. The first-generation biomass resources,primarily edible biomass materials, present anissue of “competing with people for food/land.” Thesecond-generation biomass resources are derivedfrom non-edible sources, mainly lignocellulosicmaterials, which are accompanied by immatureprocesses for their efficient conversion into valuablebiofuels and other high-value bioproducts. Thirdgenerationbiomass resources represent an emergingfrontier in the world of sustainable bioenergy andbioproducts, primarily consisting of algae or rapidlysynthesized biomass achieved through advanced cellengineering techniques. This report focuses onbioenergy, bio-based chemicals, bio-based plasticsand bio-based macromolecular materials (textilesand paper) in technical conversion, highlighting the resources, dominating technical routes, challengesand prospects.
