NO This document outlines the roles and significance of Indigenous peoples and local knowledge holders as vital sources of data for environmental assessments, particularly within the context of GEO processes. It identifies key types of contributors, including Indigenous individuals with first-hand or inherited environmental expertise, formally trained scientists from these communities, those with in-depth knowledge of local networks, experts in Indigenous and Local Knowledge (ILK) literature, practitioners experienced in recording ILK, and facilitators of dialogue between ILK holders and scientists or policymakers. Recognizing that Indigenous and Local Knowledge is generated, practiced, and transmitted differently from scientific knowledge, the document emphasizes the need for tailored procedures to incorporate ILK effectively. It highlights the importance of using narrative-based approaches and evaluating storylines based on criteria such as verifiability, specificity, and relevance. Ultimately, it advocates for inclusive and respectful collaboration between knowledge systems to enhance environmental decision-making.
